Understanding Hospice

Wondering if it's the right time?

Most families wait too long to ask. Hospice isn't about giving up. It's about giving your loved one comfort, dignity, and time that actually feels good. If a doctor has said "six months or less," you can start hospice today.

Our team comes to wherever your loved one is. Home. A parent's house. Assisted living. We handle the nurses, the medications, the equipment, the calls. Your family gets to just be family.

What if my loved one won't accept it?
That's the hardest part for a lot of families. Our nurses and social workers have spent years helping families through exactly that conversation. Sometimes we can help. Call and we'll talk it through with you.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions About Hospice

Does Medicare cover hospice care completely?

Yes. The Medicare Hospice Benefit covers 100% of hospice services including nursing visits, medications related to the terminal diagnosis, medical equipment, home health aide visits, social worker visits, chaplain services, and bereavement support. Most patients have zero out-of-pocket cost. Medi-Cal also provides full coverage for qualifying patients.

Can my loved one leave hospice if they improve?

Absolutely. Hospice is always voluntary. If a patient's condition stabilizes or improves, they can be discharged from hospice and return to curative treatment at any time. They can also re-enroll in hospice later if needed. There is no penalty for leaving and coming back.

How quickly can Aasta start hospice services?

In most cases we can begin services within 24 to 48 hours of receiving physician orders. For urgent situations we have same-day admissions available. The moment you call us, we begin working to get care in place as quickly as possible.

Does choosing hospice mean stopping all medications?

No. Hospice focuses on comfort, which means medications that manage pain, anxiety, breathing difficulties, and other symptoms are fully covered and provided. What typically changes is stopping treatments aimed at curing the illness, such as chemotherapy or dialysis, in favor of treatments that improve quality of life.

Can hospice be provided in an assisted living facility or nursing home?

Yes. Aasta Health provides hospice services wherever your loved one calls home, private residences, assisted living communities, board and care homes, and skilled nursing facilities throughout Simi Valley, Bakersfield, Northridge, and surrounding areas.

What does the hospice team visit schedule look like?

Visit frequency is tailored to the patient's needs and can change over time. A typical week may include nurse visits two to three times, a home health aide visit for bathing and personal care, and social worker or chaplain visits as needed. A nurse is available by phone 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and can come to the home at any time if the situation requires it.
